How to Repurpose a Bedroom Into Something Great

Your college kid is finally getting a job, or the new house you just bought came with an extra room. Either way, you have an enclosed space that you aren’t sure how to use. Here are some fantastic suggestions to turn that bedroom into something useful:

Work in Your Home Office

With a home office, you won’t have to set up your laptop and paperwork on the dining room table every time you bring work home. Set up a large desk in your new home office and you can leave your paperwork out permanently but can still close the door when company comes. Add plenty of storage in the form of cabinets and files for office supplies, and reference books. To take care of more business, you can include equipment that combines a printer, fax and scanner in a compact space.

This new workspace may spur you on to start a home business. Aside from making extra income, you’ll also be able to claim some of your expenses as tax deductions.

Get Fit in a Home Gym

If the local health club is too far for you to visit regularly, a home gym makes fitness more convenient. A mirrored wall is ideal so you can check your form, but even a large wall mirror helps. You can keep the carpeted floor for some types of workouts and lay an exercise mat on it for activities such as yoga. But most exercise programs need some solid flooring, such as wood for dance or gymnastics, or rubberized floors for weight training. Measure everything out to ensure that you have enough room for the equipment you intend to buy. Add enough electronics so that music can accompany your exercises. You want to keep everything bright and cheery with plenty of lighting and inspirational graphics.

Enjoy Your Home Theater

You can spend Friday nights at the movies without spending money leaving your house if you have a home theater. If you want to pack more people into the room, go with vintage theater seats, which you can find on eBay or at antique malls. Otherwise, go for some comfortable recliners if it’s just you and your sweetie. Room darkening shades or curtains are a must to keep light from entering, and so are dimmer switches for the lights so you can go from entrance bright to showtime dark.

You’ll then need some digital projection equipment, preferably with built-in wireless access to your home network so that you can stream the latest movies from Netflix, HBO GO or Amazon. If you want to go old-school, you can always attach a Blue-Ray/DVD player to the projector. Don’t forget a projection screen. Finish your theater off with movie posters and a popcorn machine.
