What to Donate When Moving

What to Donate When Moving

People often move during the summer. Kids are out of school and there’s no snow or cold weather to contend with. If you’re preparing to move, you’ll want to go through your home and purge. There are items you should toss or donate so you don’t have to pack up and move items that won’t get used in the new home. Here are a few items that you should donate before you move.

Clothing

Prior to moving, the first place you should remove clutter from is your closet. This is a great place to start as there’s normally a ton of clothing that you’ve outgrown, don’t want, or haven’t recently worn. Consider taking clothes that do not fit or are not worn down to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill. Don’t forget to also go through shoes and accessories.

Old Electronics

Most people think old electronics are worthless, but this is not the case. Even if it doesn’t work or is outdated, donate it. The parts and systems can either be recycled or refurbished and used in new products. Goodwill actually encourages this practice and you should donate all electronics regardless of the condition. There also may be local programs that recycle electronics in your community, so, if nothing else, make sure they’re recycled.

Old washing machines and dryers can certainly be reused or disassembled and recycled. Appliances that are usable and in good condition, such as refrigerators and ovens, are sought after by donation centers and charities.

Furniture

Let’s face it; hauling your old furniture to your new home is something you probably don’t want to do. If you have furniture that won’t fit in with the decor of your new home, doesn’t fit in the new space, or is old and dated, donate it. Give away your old chairs, sofas, mattresses and tables. It makes your journey easier and helps others.

Old Appliances

Old washing machines and dryers can certainly be reused or disassembled and recycled. Appliances that are usable and in good condition, such as refrigerators and ovens, are sought after by donation centers and charities. If you have old appliances that you will not need at your new home, contact local charities or donation centers to see if they accept the appliance you have. Many also offer free pick-up for appliances, making the process of donating as easy as possible on you.

If your items are still in decent condition, you can donate them. However, some items are simply in poor condition or cannot be reused. These items should be disposed of. If you have a lot of items to discard before a move, consider renting a dumpster from Debris Box. Renting a dumpster helps you quickly and easily dispose of items that no longer have any life, making your move fast and easy.
