The Best Ways to Avoid Hoarding

Let’s face it. We all have a little too much stuff. Many things you’d find in a regular household might only get used once a year or less! Cleaning up, and freeing up space, can be liberating, stress relieving, and regular decluttering can actually help to prevent you from becoming a hoarder. Unfortunately, many people do not complete the decluttering process because they are not sure where to begin, but we have some tips to help get you started.

Figure Out What Hoarding Is

Before you can avoid hoarding in your home, you must first understand what hoarding is. One of the biggest misconceptions is that if you have a cluttered home, you must be a hoarder. But this is not the case. Some people simply have small spaces and a lot of items. As such, their homes are cluttered. If this is the case in your home, you may benefit by renting a self-storage unit and placing some of your items there. On the other hand, if you have items that are used only once a year or less, are never worn, are broken or are missing pieces or have no purpose in your home, and you still won’t discard them, you may be hoarding those items.

Go Space By Space

If you do not want to hoard belongings, you need to routinely declutter spaces, getting rid of items you no longer use or have a use for. However, when you think about going through a cluttered home, it can be overwhelming. As such, you should take it room by room or space by space when you are getting started. Start with something small, like a linen closet or bathroom. Then move on to bedrooms, followed by larger tasks, like kitchens or your garage. Taking things slowly helps to make the process easier and helps you to set small goals you can accomplish.

Celebrate Your New Found Space

After you have decluttered your home, take the time to celebrate the work you have completed. Rewarding yourself by basking in the space you have is one of the best ways to congratulate yourself on a job well done. From there, remember how you feel so you don’t allow clutter to build up in your home, and so you make a habit of decluttering your home once a year.
