How to Pick the Right Dumpster Size for Your Project

How to Pick the Right Dumpster Size for Your Project

You only know three sure things about your project. You have a schedule that’s too short. The budget isn’t enough. And it’s going to make a big mess. How you deal with the third thing is going to affect the first two so picking the right dumpster size is critical.

Dumpster Basics

Rent from us with a simple phone call and a roll-off dumpster is dropped off at your location by truck. It is a rectangular metal container that typically has an open top and swing doors on one end for easy loading. You then fill it with materials or debris that you want to be removed from your property. We then haul it and all your trash away.

Dumpsters come in multiple sizes that are specified as width, length, and height, as well as cubic yards, which measures three feet by three feet by three feet. Think of a cubic yard as being about the size of an oven. A dumpster that holds 40 cubic yards would hold about ten ovens.

Dumpster Sizes

We offer three dumpster sizes for your project.

  • Standard Box. Measuring 8’ wide by 22’ long by 6’ high, this box holds about 39.11 cubic yards. It works for most projects, including residential renovations and commercial cleanups. Use it for mixed loads that do not contain heavy materials such as rock or concrete. It can handle additions to a large home, window or siding replacement for a large home, disposal of large amounts of paper and trash, or the cleanout of an office building.
  • Low Boy. Measuring 8’ wide by 16’ long by 2’ high and holding about nine cubic yards, this box is ideal for heavier materials like brick, rock, or concrete that should not go into the standard box. Its low height makes it convenient to load from the top. Use it when demolishing a concrete or brick wall, or breaking up a concrete patio or driveway.
Low Boy. Measuring 8’ wide by 16’ long by 2’ high and holding about nine cubic yards, this box is ideal for heavier materials like brick, rock, or concrete that should not go into the standard box.
  • Midsize: Measuring 8’ wide by 18’ long by 6’ high and accommodating 32 yards, this box has a relatively compact size that fits in shorter driveways. It can accommodate mixed loads with some heavy materials. It works for medium amounts of trash, garage demolition, siding or window replacement in a small to medium-size home, or an addition to a large home.

Picking the Right Size

Price goes up with size, but it’s more cost-effective to bring in one large dumper than two smaller ones. Don’t try to skimp on size by forcing more debris into a smaller space. If you do, we may have to bring in the small dumpster you selected a second time so that you can eliminate all your trash.
